Dear Fitness Family,

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year! As we head into 2012 I felt it was appropriate to talk about "self." By spending a little time working on yourself, you can benefit all aspects of your life. Below, I have outline my seven keys to improving "Self':

1. Know your purpose

2. Know your values

3. Know your needs

4. Know your passions

5. Live from the inside out

6. Honor your strengths

7. Serve others

As you enter the New Year take some time to think about yourself and write down your thoughts to the statements above.

How To Get Everything You Want in 2012

Red and green decorations are out,Here's to a Happy New Year and to getting everything that you want out of 2012!

Today you have a clean slate with a brand new year spread out in front of you, filled with endless possibilities.

How will you harness your potential to create the very best you? Dr. Maxwell Maltz recommends using the teachings of in his legendary book 'The New Psycho-Cybernetics'.

Dr. Maltz shows us the science of self improvement and success. Are you ready to take your life to another level?

Take the following and get all that you want out of 2012:

1) Use Your Imagination
If you thought that imaginations were only valued in preschool, think again. One of the key points in 'The New Psycho-Cybernetics' is the technique of using your imagination to reprogram and manage your self image.

You may have been exposed to self improvement strategies that tell you to 'act as if' or to 'fake it till you make it.' Those typically don't work because your self image is still the same.

According to Dr. Maltz, your self image is the key to changing your actions and habits. If you want to lose 50 pounds, you first have to think of yourself as someone 50 pounds lighter.

Spend time in your imagination. See yourself 50 pounds lighter. Experience a day in your life at this slimmed down size. Imagine everything down to the smallest detail.

According to Dr. Maltz, this imagination time will begin to change your self image to that of a person 50 pounds lighter, and your actions and habits will fall into place.

2) Reject Negative Thoughts
Negative thoughts will undoubtedly arise as you use your imagination to see your ideal self. "I'm not really going to lose 50 pounds." "I've tried losing weight before and it never works. I'm always going to be overweight." "This imagination stuff is bogus. It won't work for me."

The instant you receive a negative thought simply dismiss it. Don't spend any time on it at all.

The quicker that you dismiss negative thoughts, the less impact they will have on your self image. Also you'll find that fewer and fewer negative thoughts arise once you get into the habit of dismissal.

3) Be Nostalgic For The Future
It's so easy to be nostalgic for the past, especially when you only remember the good stuff. But what good does it do for you to wish for things that are long gone?

Develop a nostalgia for the future.

In your imagination you've already lost the 50 pounds, so start pining for the future! Your self image will lock onto that picture and your nostalgic feelings will fuel the fire.

4) I'm The Kind Of Person That...
What kind of person are you?

  • I'm the kind of person that loves sweets.
  • I'm the kind of person that hates exercise.
  • I'm the kind of person that can't lose weight.

OR

  • I'm the kind of person that eats fresh and healthy food.
  • I'm the kind of person that keeps fit.
  • I'm the kind of person that maintains an ideal body weight.

Your self image will fulfill any label that you put on yourself. The power is all in your hands.

What kind of a person do you want to be in 2012?

Member Spotlight - 'From Fat to Fighting Machine'
Hi Joe,

Thanks for the opportunity to share my weight loss story with other members. I love being a part of the Gilroy Health and Fitness Family and wanted to share my journey with others in the hopes of inspiring someone else that might be going through what I went through. Here's my story... I call it; 'From Fat Slob to Lean Mean Fighting Machine':

I'm 42 years old and have lived in Gilroy since 1977. I'm a single father of my 10 year old daughter, Jenna. She is the light of my life. I've always had an interest in health, fitness, and body building since I was a young boy and stayed active in school playing sports like soccer, swimming, baseball, track, wrestling, and weight lifting.

After high school I didn't make the time for sports. I moved away to college and for the most part my activity level had dramatically decreased while my consumption of fast food, processed and junk food increased. I was a stranger in a strange town and didn't know too many people. I was starting to feel depressed. I did what most people did when they were depressed. I ate to comfort myself. I ate early in the morning, all day long, and late at night.

I ate top ramen 7 days a week, along with fast food and I wasn't eating many fruits or vegetables at all. I would drink Big Gulps all day because I thought I was getting a lot of value for my money. Ironically, what I didn't realize was, there was a bigger cost I hadn't even considered, my health.

You see, in high school I was trim and fit and graduated my Senior year at 140 pounds. However in college I wasn't doing any sports or exercising and my diet was horrible. I had ballooned up to 230 pounds. I gained 90 pounds!

My energy levels were way down and I felt my health was starting to take a turn for the worst. I would get tired really easily. My feet, knees, and joints were always sore from carrying the excess weight. And worst of all, my self-confidence had taken a nose dive. My friends would snicker and laugh making fat jokes about me.

I decided one day that enough was enough. I wanted to take some steps forward and make some positive changes in my life.

 Brian1

And I did. But almost immediately, I unfortunately faced a set back. My belly was so big that when I started to do sit ups, I displaced a disk in my lower back and was in excruciating pain 24 hours a day for 6 months straight. But I wasn't going to give up. I was determined to do whatever it took to lose the fat, gain muscle and get healthy. Because of my injury, I could not lift any weights or do cardio. I had to get creative. I thought long and hard about what I could do to lose the excess body fat. Then suddenly I had an "Ah-Ha moment", Swimming! It was one of the sports I had enjoyed as a boy. It was easy, effective, fun, and best of all, it was no impact on my injured body. I drove to the gym and I started swimming. At first I would swim for 20 minutes, the 30 minutes, then 45 minutes. The next thing I knew an hour would fly by, then an hour and a half, then 2 hours. Wow, swimming was easy, effective, fun, and best of all, it was no impact on my injured body.

Soon after I began swimming (plus many trips to the chiropractor) I began to get healthier and started to see results. I loved the way I felt when exercising. It was like a natural high. My weight started to drop down to 210 pounds, 200, then 190 pounds. The next thing I knew I was down to 170 pounds! My injury had been healed through a combination of the chiropractor, nutrition and exercise.

I was ready for weight lifting. I would weight lift for 1 hour to an hour and a half a day and started building muscle mass quickly. I started studying more about healthy nutrition. Protein shakes, protein bars, fruits and vegetables became more of the foods I ate while fast food and processed foods became less.

One day I saw my gym had started a kickboxing program and I was curious about it. As a boy, I watched all the Bruce Lee karate and Rocky movies and had always wanted to try both. Now I had the opportunity. The first day I showed up and was excited. Five minutes into the class I was already tired. Wow, what a shock! I was now a big strong body builder full of muscle. How could I be tired after 5 minutes of doing punches, kicks, knees, and elbows? From that moment on, I decided I wanted to change the focus of my training. I found kickboxing to be challenging yet fun and practical, effective method of working out. If I ever had to defend myself in a fight I could do it.  In one hour of kickboxing, I could burn more fat, build up endurance, have fun, get strong and healthy, and learn to defend myself all at the same time. I was hooked. I now train 5 times per week.

Brian2 Now I'm a lean mean fighting machine. I weigh 170 pounds and I'm at 9% body fat. It took a while for me to lose all the weight that I had packed on over the years but I was focused and determined to make in happen. I saw the quickest and best result when I changed my diet. One that consisted of whole foods: vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and lean meats and added certain supplements to help speed up the process. I also saw dramatic results and fat burn off very quickly when I started doing kickboxing. The instructor pushed me farther than I normally would push myself. When I started getting one on one personal training the results came even faster than I could have ever imagined.

It's been a fun, interesting, and adventurous journey for me. I'm so glad that I decided to make this positive change in my life. I feel so amazing and my energy levels have gone through the roof. I'm happy to be alive and live my life to the fullest with intense passion. My friends, family and members at the gym are now coming up to me and saying "Oh my God! You look amazing. You have lost so much weight, how did you do it?" I share with them a few helpful tips with the biggest smile on my face.

If you are overweight and you want to get lean, fit, and healthy, you can do it! I did it, and I'm never going back.

All the Best,

Brian Carnes
